A word originating in Ireland, in South Africa shebeens started in the Apartheid era as an alternative to the pubs and bars black Africans were barred from. Today, they form a vibrant part of the community, and continue to define the social life of many South Africans.

Shisa nyama is a Zulu word meaning 'burn meat' and describes a style of eating where you choose your own meat from the butchery and then have it barbecued (braaied) to your specifications. In the modern version of shisa nyama, venues create their own flavour, from a weekend party atmosphere with DJs and bars, to quick and easy street-side food for a working lunch break.

Urban Inanda

The township of Inanda is regarded by many as the cradle of South Africa’s democracy, and is said to have more heritage sites per square kilometre than anywhere else in the country. As you follow the stories of three iconic leaders, namely Nelson Mandela, John Dube and Mahatma Ghandi with a visit to the century-old Ohlange Institute, you can also enjoy the flavours of local food and traditional Zulu Beer Brewing at a local Shabeen.

KwaDabeka and Molweni

Just south of KwaDabeka is Zazi Street in Clermont, fast receiving international acclaim as a tourist hotspot and a reflection of a modern Durban culture. Home to a vibrant mix of traders including grocery stores, Shebeens and Shisa nyama restaurants, this is also the home of Joseph Shabalala, the founding member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
